GEORGE TOWN: The search and rescue (SAR) mission continues for an elderly man who is missing following the capsize of a boat on Friday evening.
He was one of six who were on a surveying mission to look for rocks believed to be used for wave barriers.
The boat was off the Northam Beach coast, along Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, when the vessel capsized during the 7pm incident after experiencing rough seas.
In relating the ordeal to reporters, Hamdan Osman, 35, said he and another two grabbed a floating marker while another three held on to an oil drum after the boat sank.
He said they had tried to hold on to the missing man but eventually lost their grip.
"A boat passed by and we waved for help, luckily we were rescued as we were getting tired," the Indonesian national said after he was rescued on Friday.
On the SAR, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Deputy Operations Director Commander Azman Samsudin said the search area encompasses some 10 nautical miles.
He said the missing man has been identified as Rosmin Selamat, 62, from Manjung, Perak.
He said four boats were combing the search area since last night in their efforts to locate the missing man.
"The search begins at 7am and ends at 7pm depending on the condition of the sea," he said in a press conference today at Northam Beach.
He was accompanied by Lebuh Pantai Fire Station Chief Senior Fire Officer II D. Raman who said a boat was also deployed for the mission.
