PETALING JAYA: The representation of Sarawakians in Petronas activities in the state would see a dramatic increase by 2020, Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem (pix) said.
He said Sarawakians will fill 60% of management positions in the government-linked company, as opposed to only 33% currently.
Locals' involvement in managerial, executive and non-executive positions would also be increased to 60%, 75% and 95% respectively.
These were part of the agreement reached between Sarawak and the federal government in a meeting between Adenan and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and Petronas chief executive officer Datuk Wan Zulkifli Wan Ariffin at the Prime Minister's Office on friday.
Adenan in the update posted on his Facebook said Sarawak had also agreed to review the issuance of work permits with a view to lift some which are frozen.
"The state will review all 586 positions now pending approval for work permits to ensure that Sarawakians are given priority to fill the posts," Adenan wrote.
He also said a Sarawakian would be appointed to the board of directors of Petronas, represented by the state secretary.
He added that the current 192 vacant positions in the company are to be filled by Sarawakians.
"Petronas is to consult the state government if no Sarawakian is suitable for the job," Adenan said.
The meeting also agreed that Petronas would provide up to 50 places for Sarawakians to pursue undergraduate studies at Universiti Teknologi Petronas.
Adenan said issues with regards to the state's oil royalty and other related matters would be discussed in the future.
There are currently a total of 3,880 Sarawakians employed by Petronas in the state, while another 1,310 are non-locals.
