Two women killed, four injured in rear-end crash involving six vehicles

JOHOR BARU: Two women were killed and four of their family members were seriously injured when the Proton Wira car they were travelling in was hit by a lorry at Km115.6 of the North-South Expressway (north bound) near Batu Pahat last night.
Batu Pahat district police chief ACP Abdul Wahib Musa said the four other vehicles involved in the crash, which occurred at 9pm, were two lorries, including a trailer, and two cars – a Perodua Viva and a BMW.
He said the victims killed in the crash were front passenger Che Pon Ahmad, 74, and Sabahriah Mahad, 53, who was in the back seat. They were from Taman Melaka Baru, Melaka.
The injured were the car driver, Mohamad Redzuan Roselin, 31, from Felda Layang-Layang, Simpang Renggam, near Kluang, and three children, whose identity had yet to be ascertained, he said in a statement here today.
Abdul Wahib said the drivers of the other vehicles involved in the crash were not injured.
The rear-end collision occurred when the car in which the victims were travelling in was said to have stopped on the fast lane because of an accident that happened up north and was hit by the lorry which was trailing behind.
The impact caused the car to be pushed for 12 metres and crashed into another lorry travelling ahead.
Che Pon and Sabahriah died on the sport and their bodies were sent to Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital in Batu Pahat for post mortem, while the injured victims were sent to the Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital in Muar for treatment.
Abdul Wahib said the family was believed to be on their way home after attending an engagement ceremony in Kluang.
He said a lorry driver, aged 48, had been detained for questioning.
The crash caused a 10-metre traffic congestion on the expressway. — Bernama
