GEORGE TOWN: The 62-year-old man reported missing for 35 hours following the capsize of a boat on Friday evening was found dead offshore in Persiaran Gurney yesterday.
MMEA northern region enforcement chief First Admiral Tan Kok Kwee said the body of Rosmin Selamat from Manjung, Perak was found by passers-by about 8.04am.
He said the body was handed to police after the search and rescue operation by maritime authorities, Fire and Rescue Department, police, Civil Defence Department and members of the public were called off.
Tan advised those on boats to wear life jackets as a safety measure and stay vigilant at all times.
Rosmin together with six of his friends were on a surveying mission to look for rocks believed to be used for wave barriers.
The boat was off the Northam Beach coast, along Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah, when it capsized in the 7pm incident on Friday after experiencing rough seas.
Rosmin and his friends fell into the sea but the others were rescued by a passing boat.
