PETALING JAYA: At least three cases of school bullying or pranks gone bad have occurred in the last few days, with the latest resulting in the death of a 15-year-old student in Putrajaya today.
The fatal incident occurred when the victim, identified as Azim Hakimi Abu Shuja, fell off a ledge on the third floor of his school when he tried to retrieve his friend's bag which had been out of a window by other classmates as a prank.
Azim reportedly climbed onto the ledge at Sekolah Menengah Kebangssan (SMK) Precinct 9 (2), lost his balance and fell to his death about 9.30am.
Putrajaya police chief ACP Rosly Hassan when contacted, confirmed the incident.
The victim's mother, Zalina Kamis, 53, said her son was a little quiet lately and on Sunday night, he was with friends preparing for the PT3 oral test.
"This morning, as usual, he waved at me when I sent him to school," said Zalina, an assistant director at the Arts and Culture Division of the Education Ministry, when met at Putrajaya Hospital.
Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, who extended his condolences to Azim's family via his Facebook posting, said the ministry will review the designs of school buildings to enhance safety features.
Mahdzir said the designs of schools in Putrajaya were prepared by Putrajaya Holdings (PJH) instead of the Public Works Department (JKR) and are different from conventional ones.
Meanwhile in Sungei Petani, Kedah, a 14-year-old boy sustained serious head and body injuries after he was assaulted by four Form 3 students at his school, here, on Sunday.
It is learnt that the Form 2 student suffered internal bleeding in the head and was warded at the intensive care unit of Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Star.
Kuala Muda district police chief ACP Md Zukir Md Isa said the incident occurred in the victim's classroom during the morning session.
"One of the boys was unhappy that the victim had pulled his sibling into the classroom," said Zukir.
Four boys, all aged 15, later confronted the victim and beat him up and slammed his head against the wall.
He said the victim was initially sent to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for treatment but was later referred to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital after an X-ray showed signs of internal bleeding in his head.
The four boys have been detained for questioning and the case is being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt.
The Kedah Education Department said the case will be left to police to investigate as the victim's father had lodged a police report.
In another case, an 11-second video which went viral on Facebook last Wednesday, showed a group of five youngsters holding a boy spread-eagled by his limbs and repeatedly ramming his groin against a pole while he was crying "sakit" (painful) throughout the agonising ordeal.
A police report was lodged by the victims' parents but police later dismissed the case as a prank, saying no element of bullying was involved.
"The video allegedly involving students from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Meru was just a prank and not actually a bullying incident. Further investigation by the police found that the incident was a joke and made without the intention to bully the victim," read a statement from the official police Facebook page.
A school official said the boy had not suffered any serious injury.
"The case is closed. The boy did not suffer any injuries and the school is happy with the police verdict," she said.
Attempts to contact the boy or his family were futile at press time.
When contacted, Deputy Education Minister II Datuk P. Kamalanathan said all cases of bullying should be highlighted to the authorities so that action can be taken.
"If you know of any such cases, don't say that it is not your problem, that it has nothing to do with your family and so on," said Kamalanathan, adding that he was disappointed that bullying cases are still happening and that it is the ministry's aim to achieve zero bullying nationwide.
"We will conduct a thorough investigation into the incidents," he added.
