KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians should put aside differences regardless of their backgrounds for the sake of unity and solidarity in the country, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said in addition, the people must also reconnect with each other if there is any semblance of disunity in order to achieve greater solidarity.

"I think we should take a moment and look at the level of unity among Malaysians.

"The important message is to put aside differences among us," he told reporters here tonight.

Ahmad Zahid was commenting on the National Day 2016 speech delivered by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak at a special ceremony held at Dewan Merdeka, Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) here tonight.

The event was organised by the Communications and Multimedia Ministry in collaboration with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama).

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said the National Day theme "Sehati Sejiwa" (One Heart, One Soul) must be deeply felt by Malaysians in fostering unity.

"As Malaysians, let's reconnect if there are any broken relations. Let's have one heart, one soul," he said. — Bernama
