GEORGE TOWN: A jewellery shop in Jalan Penang suffered some RM10,000 in losses during a smash and grab robbery this afternoon.

Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Ghafar Rajab said the perpetrators were a man and a woman during the 2.30pm incident.

He said both were wearing full face helmets when they walked in before one of them smashed the glass counter with an axe.

The suspects, he added, then grabbed the valuables at the counter before fleeing the scene on a motorcycle parked outside.

He said the robbery took only a few minutes and police were now reviewing the close circuit television (CCTV) footage for clues.

"We are searching for them both," he said in a press conference after witnessing Datuk Roslee Chik receive his duties as the new Penang deputy police chief.

Roslee takes over from Datuk A. Thaiveegan who has been appointed to the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) deputy director post.

Attempts by theSun to speak to the owner of the shop were declined.

On the case of the Oh My God music video by Namewee, Abdul Ghafar said police have recorded 15 statements from several individuals including the Penang Mufti.

He said the statement from the Mufti was important since he was one of the experts on the subject at hand.

"We have been give a month to complete the probe before referring the case to the public prosecutor for further action," he added.

Abdul Ghafar also brushed aside the claims by the controversial rapper that police lock-up conditions were poor.

He said Namewee, real name Wee Meng Chee, was treated well when he was remanded last month and did not understand the intention to create controversy from nothing.
