KUALA LUMPUR: Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai has expressed concern over the increase in bus accidents along the Karak Highway.
Commenting on Wednesday's bus crash in Genting Sempah, Liow said remedial measures have been put in place due to the number of accidents along the route.
He added that the authorities had even implemented measures suggested in more than 50 proposals they received after a previous bus accident in the area.
"We have implemented all of the measures but accidents are still happening.
"The ministry needs to further study how we can prevent such accidents from happening again," he told reporters after attending a "meet and greet" session with the International Malaysian Society of Maritime Law at the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration here.
In the Wednesday afternoon incident, 14 people, including the driver, were injured when their tour bus rammed into a road barrier and fell on its side just after the Genting Sempah tunnel along the Karak Highway.
Liow said he had received a preliminary report on the accident, but said the cause of the crash is still unknown.
"Investigations are ongoing and the report will be provided to me soon.
"Once we determine the cause, we will take action. If it was the driver's fault, immediate action will be taken," he added.
Liow said many of the passengers sustained serious injuries, with some were warded in the Intensive Care Unit.
Commenting on the country's first Zika infection case, Liow said the government would be stepping up screening measures at all entry points into Malaysia, especially at airports, to prevent the deadly virus from spreading.
"Although passenger screening comes under the Health Ministry, we will provide support in conducting the process at airports and ports.
"We have to make sure screening at entry points is sufficient," he added.
