DUNGUN: An automated teller machine (ATM) at a bank here was blasted open early this morning and about RM260,000 has vanished.

Dungun district police chief Supt Ahmad Zailani Yaacub said the incident took place at about 5.50am when two masked men tried to break into the ATM machine, which was located near the main entrance to the bank.

He said the suspects were found to have used a pry bar before inserting an explosive device into the machine.

"Via the closed-circuit camera (CCTV), two masked men were seen entering the premises and trying to pry open the first layer of the ATM machine before blasting it.

"As soon as the bank's alarm went off, patrol unit cars arrived at the bank, but the suspects had fled," he said at the scene of the incident.
Ahmad Zailani said thieves also tried to break into another ATM machine there, but failed.

According to him, the suspects took about five minutes to carry out the whole activity before escaping in a car.

He said they are still identifying the explosive device used and a manhunt to identify the suspects was also underway. — Bernama
