PETALING JAYA: The Education Ministry may re-evaluate its standard operating procedure (SOP) on handling bullying cases in schools due to the increasing number of such cases in recent weeks.
“The ministry has a very clear and concise SOP with regards to bullying (cases).
“(In view of recent bullying cases), we may need to re-evaluate its delivery and messaging if such violent cases continue to happen,” Deputy Education Minister II Datuk P. Kamalanathan told theSun today.
He stressed that bullying of any kind is abhorred and that the ministry will continue to keep the safety and well-being of students as a priority.
Kamalanathan was responding to a report of another bullying case in schools.
The latest in Sabah comes barely 10 days after three separate cases of school bullying occurred nationwide resulting in the death of one boy.
The video clip of the incident in Sabah has gone viral since making its rounds on social media.
The clip shows a bully seemingly bashing up his victim and police have started a probe into the incident.
Sabah police chief Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun confirmed a report had been lodged by the victim’s family.
“Our officers are investigating the case in Putatan (Sabah) and we will be looking for several pupils of the school,” he said.
The two-minute clip shows a school boy violently attacking his seemingly helpless classmate.
The two boys, clad in baju Melayu school uniforms, were in a tussle as their classmates looked on and recorded the incident.
The bully violently threw punches till his victim fell to the ground and then he kicked and slapped him while the victim was still on the floor.
The victim was held in a choke-hold and even had a chair thrown on him while he was lying on the ground in pain.
The victim only covered his face with his hands in an effort to protect his head from the barrage.
A few girls could be heard giggling and making exclamations in the background.
No one seemed to stop the fight, but there was a dissenting voice in the background who tried to urge the bully to stop, but the bully just kept at it.
Thus far, the video has gotten some 304,000 views and 16,511 shares on Facebook since it was uploaded yesterday.
