PUTRAJAYA: The Foreign Ministry has instructed a Malaysian diplomat facing a lawsuit in New York to settle the issue amicably.
"This is a civil case involving a private contractual agreement, and will thus be dealt with according to the due process of law," the ministry said in a statement.
It said it had taken note that a lawsuit had been filed in New York against a Malaysian civil servant formerly stationed at the Office of the Consul General in New York.
The ministry said the matter had been brought to the attention of the officer involved with instructions that it should be settled amicably.
According to The New York Post, a Malaysian diplomat and spouse were being sued for allegedly treating their Sri Lankan maid virtually as a slave, making her work 15-plus hours a day for no more than US$1.71 (RM6.95) per hour – "when she was paid at all". — Bernama
