Ahmad Said to remain in Umno

KEMAMAN: Kijal state assemblyman Datuk Seri Ahmad Said (pix) today stated his commitment to remain loyal to Umno and not join the newly-formed Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia led by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The former Terengganu Menteri Besar, who had joined Umno when he was just 18, said he wanted to carry on serving the party and hoped that no one would continue to question and challenge his loyalty.
"Tun Mahathir Mohamad had sent people to see me, asking me to join the new party. Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin had also offered me a position as a member of the party's supreme council.
"As for now, I want to wait and see. I have not answered them ... but I am not sure when I would do so. I'm afraid I would not be able to resist the persistent insistence," he said when opening the Kemaman Umno Division delegates meeting here today.
Ahmad, 59, had also said that he had received offers to join PAS, PKR and Amanah, and that he had rejected all the offers as he did not want to betray Umno.
Ahmad said he was determined to stay with Umno to see the changes that would be carried out by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak in the wake of the political developments in the state.
"I was informed that Najib had called several state assemblymen to personally find out about the issue in the state," he said.
He also asked for an investigation to find out why only 686 of the 973 delegates had attended the meeting.
Kemaman's is the only Umno division delegates meeting in Terengganu opened by its own chief. — Bernama
