BUKIT MERTAJAM: A hike up Bukit Cherok Tokun turned into a four-hour ordeal for a form four student after he lost his way.
Mohd Benjamin, 16, was with two friends at the start of the 7am hike up the hill, about 6km from here.
Along the way, he stopped to catch his breath while the other two continued their hike up the popular recreational spot.
He however could not track his friends nor find his way out from the forest after regaining his strength and quickly sent a text message to them asking for help.
Authorities initiated a search and rescue (SAR) mission after the two friends alerted the Penang Fire and Rescue as well as Civil Defence departments.
A Fire Department spokesman said the SAR operation began about 9.20am while the student was found safe about 11.30am.
He added seven firefighters from the Bukit Mertajam fire station searched the area with the assistance of four other hikers.
“We found him with minor scratches on his legs which he suffered after being chased by stray dogs,” he said.
