JOHOR BARU: The High Court today ordered a labourer, who was given a jail sentence for posting insulting comments against the Tunku Mahkota of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, on social media, to be sent to Henry Gurney school, Malacca, until he reaches the age of 21.
Judge Datuk Mohd Sofian Abd Razak, in dismissing the earlier Sessions Court decision, said Muhammad Amirul Azwan Mohd Shakri, was 18 years old when he committed the offences.
He said according to Section 76 of the Child Protection Act, 2001, anyone aged between 18 and 21 years should be placed in the Henry Gurney School and not a general prison.
He advised Amirul not to repeat the offence and to work hard in school for a better future.
Amirul, 19, had earlier pleaded guilty to posting the insulting comments against the Tunku Mahkota of Johor on social media last April 24 and April 27.
He was sentenced to a year's jail, on each of 14 counts for posting the insulting comments, by the Sessions Court last June 7, 2016, which ordered the sentences to run concurrently.
Amirul, from Tumpat, was placed at the Pengkalan Chepa prison in Kota Baru.
DPP Nor Azizah Mohamad appeared for the prosecution while Amirul was represented by lawyers Hassan Karim, Jimmy Puah We Tse and John Fernandez.
