IPT students urged to obtain more than one degree

SHAH ALAM: Students of the higher learning institutions (IPT) should use the online learning method to obtain more than one degree, said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh (pix).
He said it is to enable the students to have better prospects in the job market.
"Our higher education system is changing to build a Malaysian education brand, and so we are implementing a flexible approach so that the people can have at least two degrees.
"They (IPT students) will have more opportunities to get a job with a range of qualifications and skills," he told reporters at the "Soaring Upwards: Let's Talk Higher Education" programme at the Management and Science University, here today.
Taking as an example the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) offered by 20 public universities in the country, Idris explained that the courses would be able to lift the quality of the country's higher education system by producing more graduates with more than one degree.
MOOC was launched by the Higher Education Ministry in September 2014 offering more than 60 courses online.
It is offered for free through www.OpenLearning.com to all university students and the general public.
Commenting on the 'Soaring Upwards' programme, Idris said the ministry is taking a new approach to bring industry players in the programme to reach out to students and graduates to reassure them about the quality of the country's higher education.
'Soaring Upwards' is an initiative by the Higher Education Ministry to disseminate information on the development of the country's higher education including the success achieved at national and international level. — Bernama
