KUALA LUMPUR: A jobless father and his two young children were found dead in their apartment unit at Taman Sri Sinar, Kepong yesterday.
It was a heart-wrenching sight for police investigators when they recovered at about 12.30pm the highly decomposed remains of the two children - a seven-month-old baby boy and three-year-old female toddler who were stuffed tight into two large plastic containers that were stacked above the other and wrapped in a garbage bag.
The bodies were found in a room of the house at the Nova II apartments, on Jalan 34/38a.
The body of their father who was identified as 34-year-old Cheah Hing Soon was found sprawled on the floor of the master bedroom.
On their arrival at the scene and prior to even looking at the bodies, police investigators were taken aback when they spotted a Taoist priest summoned by Cheah's wife conducting prayers over the bodies with lit joss-sticks.
The housewife who is in her 30's and was at the scene appeared to be in a state of delirium but was calm.
It is learnt that police arrested a close female relative of the victims to assist in their investigations.
Sentul police chief ACP R.Munusamy said the victims had died at least three days earlier.
He said police went to the scene after being alerted by Cheah's father.
"Cheah's wife had called her father-in-law to tell him that she found the victims dead at their house. We learnt that the couple were separated and the wife lives in another unit at the same apartments. However, she claimed that she went over to the house everyday but told us that she last saw her husband and her two children alive on Saturday. She will be taken to the station to have her statement recorded. We have classified the case as murder." he told reporters.
Police investigators are also baffled by the inconsistent statements given by Cheah's wife on her whereabouts over the past three days.
Although the housewife told police that she lived in another unit at the apartments, neighbours told police that they were unaware of this and had only seen the woman at her husband's house.
The wife also told police that she had spent the night at the apartment unit on Sunday, leaving investigators puzzled as to how was unaware of the death of her husband and two children.
Munusamy said forensics police also summoned the assistance of pathologists from the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) in gathering clues at the scene.
He said the bodies were in a state of decomposition and early findings showed no visible external injuries.
He said no weapons were found and a post-mortem will be conducted at the HKL today (Mon) to acertain the cause of death of the victims.
Investigators learnt that Cheah who had been unemployed for years received financial support from his father who is a businessman operating a credit company in Sentul.
It is learnt that the couple has two other sons aged six and eight who live with Cheah's father not far from the apartments.
