Stranded climbers rescued

GURUN: The 19 trekkers stranded on Mount Jerai last night have been rescued.

One of them who was injured was sent to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani.

Ridzuan Nut Jamudin, the head of the Search and Rescue (SAR) team from the Sungai Petani fire station which went to their aid, said all of them were brought down to the SAR command centre at the foothill of the mountain at 3.10am today.

"The climber who was injured, Nor Farah Amira Mohamed Haris, 21, was brought down in a stretcher. She sprained her ankle," he told Bernama.

"We mounted the SAR mission at 9.11pm and the search party located them at 11.56pm.

He said the stranded climbers were part of a group of 39 trekkers, in their 20s and 30s, from a youth club, and that the other 20 had safely made their way down. — Bernama
