KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian squash queen, Datuk Nicol David lost her quarterfinal match of the 2016 US Open to Egypt's Raneem El Welily in Philadelphia.
The 32-year-old world number three took almost one hour before losing 1-3 (11-8, 8-11, 10-12 and 9-11) to El Welily on Wednesday, local time (Malaysia is 12 hours ahead of Philadelphia).
According to the tournament's website www.usopensquash.com, all four games were close at the mid-point.
Nicol, the three-time champion, started and finished the first better, leading 6-2 then pulling away from 8-all to take the lead of 11-8.
El Welily opened up the lead in the second set but in the third set Nicol stayed just ahead, reaching 10-7. However, El Welily took five points in a row to take the lead of 12-10.
The fourth set was more of the same – quality rallies, determined defending and skilled attacking from both players but El Welily edged ahead to win the match.
In the semifinals, El Welily will meet compatriot Nour El Sherbini after beating England's Alison Waters 11-7, 11-2 and 11-6 in just 26 minutes. — Bernama
