Govt might have to spend around RM50b in 2020 to build flood mitigation projects at seashores

KUALA LUMPUR: The government might have to spend about RM50 billion in 2020 to build flood mitigation projects at seashores nationwide due to worsening erosion.
National Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar (pix) said sea erosion due to rising sea level, contributed by global warming, has caused the government a huge sum of money.
He added the government has been working with experts to find solutions to sea erosion, including the planting of trees and land reclamation.
"Even now, we have spent around RM10 billion to work on 51 projects nationwide. We need to look into the future so that new townships that we build can be safe for years to come," he told Dewan Rakyat in reply to a supplementary question by Datuk Rozman Isli (BN-Labuan) who asked on the effects of erosion at the seashores in Malaysia due to global warming.
Wan Junaidi said global warming brought direct impact on infrastructure and the socio-economic situation in Malaysia.
The government is taking steps to curb the issue of global warming based on the Paris Agreement it had signed this year, he said, adding it has run programmes under the national key sectors to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.
