72 students in Bukit Mertajam Hospital, food poisoning suspected

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A total of 72 students of SM Sains Tun Syed Sheh Shahabudin here were rushed to the Bukit Mertajam Hospital on Tuesday night for suspected food poisoning.
Penang Health Department director Datuk Dr M. Sukumar said 70 of them received outpatient treatment while two were warded for fever.
He said the 41 male and 31 female students complained of stomachache and suffered from vomiting after taking their dinner.
"Their condition is now stable," he said when contacted by the media on the 9.30pm incident.
Sukumar said that according to initial investigations, it is believed the students were affected by food poisoning.
He declined to elaborate when asked about what the students ate and said that investigations were ongoing.
