Additional allocation for school maintenance necessary: NUTP

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) hopes the government can increase its allocation for maintenance of school buildings across the country in the Budget 2017 to ensure the comfort and safety of teachers and students.
NUTP president Kamarozaman Abd Razak said this was very important because there were school buildings which were quite old and required immediate repairs, including many in Sabah and Sarawak.
"We have had discussions with the schools and found that the old school buildings required maintenance work, especially the wiring system, so as to avoid any untoward incident such as a fire or short-circuit," he told Bernama.
Kamarozaman said apart from that, there were schools especially daily boarding and full boarding schools which faced water supply problems.
"We are of the view that although the government is currently implementing austerity measures, issues of maintenance cannot be compromised.
"It requires immediate attention in order to avoid jeopardising the education plan planned by the ministry and learning sessions in schools," said Kamarozaman. — Bernama
