No more confusion on parking times (Updated)

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council is in the process of standardising parking times for its parking lots on the island.
Councillor Joseph Ng said standardising the time and dates was to make the system clearer.
The Council Financial Committee alternate chairman said there are three parking zones — green, blue and red — with each having different parking times and dates.
For green and blue zones, users have to pay Monday to Saturday but the times differ while payment is required week-long for red zones.
"The Council has gathered feedback via an online survey and will be getting more," he said in an ad hoc press conference after Penang Local Government Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow highlighted the smart parking gadget (SPG) today.
The SPG is an electronic parking device where credit is stored and activated by the user when one parks in a Council parking lot.
Chow said the current parking coupon system will not be phased out with the introduction of the SPG.
He said coupons were still needed as those visiting the island may not want to purchase the SPG during a short visit.
He said there may be a need to raise rates in the future to deter users from hogging parking lots due to the difference between Council and private carparks.
He said the Council can consider taking away parking lots, thereby freeing up road space, if the rates of private lots are about the same.
