Education Ministry has identified run-down schools: Chong

SEREMBAN: The Education Ministry has identified run-down schools that need upgrading under Budget 2017.

Education Deputy Minister II, Senator Chong Sin Woon said the schools required restoration to provide a conducive learning environment for the affected students.

"We really need the allocation because many schools particularly aged ones are in such run-down condition.

"We can build many schools but we must not forget there are many old schools that need facilities and restoration," he told reporters after launchng Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Datuk Sheikh Ahmad's Golden Jubilee (1966-2016) Charity Dinner here.

In Budget 2017, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who is also Finance Minister said RM570 million would be allocated to rebuild 120 schools including 30 in Sarawak and 30 in Sabah using the Industrialised Building System, and to upgrade 1,800 science laboratories.

Meanwhile, Chong said the free tablets to be provided to 430,000 teachers under a RM340 million allocation in Budget 2017 would help to facilitate the mission of the educators towards educational excellence for their students.

"It is the objective of the government to apply technology in helping to improve the level of teaching and learning in schools," he said. — Bernama
