Penang BN slams Guan Eng for taking credit for the state's fish farming industry

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Barisan Nasional (BN) has continued their series of attacks against the economic performance of the state government.

This time, the fish farming industry is in the sights of state BN chairman Teng Chang Yeow who alleged that Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng claimed credit for the success of the industry.

He said Lim was reported by a Chinese newspaper in August 2015 to have claimed there was no fish farming in the state prior to 2008 (the year Pakatan came to power) and made the claim again in Oct 14, 2015 and Oct 3, 2016.

Teng said the fish farm pilot project was launched by Agriculture Minister Datuk Amar Sulaiman Daud on April 23, 1999 at Pulau Gedong, an island off Penang island.

He said figures from the Fisheries Department showed 2,093.25 metric tonnes of fish were produced in 2001 by 355 fish farms in Penang.

He said this showed fish farming was already in place since BN governed the state and was introduced as an industry before Lim became Chief Minister.

"It was the BN state government that laid the strong foundation for the industry to grow," he said in a press conference today.
