PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia joined 192 United Nations Member States in celebrating the United Nations Day (UND) to mark the anniversary of the entry into force of the Charter of the United Nations in 1945.
The Foreign Ministry in a statement said Malaysia is firmly committed to the United Nations as an international organisation that promotes cooperation in the maintenance of international peace and security, development and human rights, which are the three pillars of the Organisation.
The theme of the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly is "The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): a universal push to transform our world".
This follows the adoption of the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development, which the Leaders of UN member states, including Malaysia, had adopted in September 2015.
The statement said Malaysia is committed to implementing the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) contained in the 2030 Agenda. This is done by integrating the SDGs as part of the National Development Strategy under the Eleventh Malaysia Plan.
As a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the term 2015-2016, Malaysia is working closely with the other Council members in fulfilling the Council mandate of maintaining international peace and security, as stipulated in the UN Charter.
While on the Council, the statement said, Malaysia has been promoting the peaceful resolution of conflicts through dialogue and utilising the approach of moderation.
In addition, Malaysia has continued to call for the Security Council to shoulder its responsibilities, in line with the UN Charter, towards finding a just and fair resolution to the question of Palestine, which has remained the longest-lasting conflict in the UN's history.
Malaysia will continue to support and commit to efforts by the Security Council and the UN as a whole in countering terrorism, which currently poses a grave threat to international peace and security.
Malaysia has been participating, since 1960, and will continue to participate actively in UN peacekeeping missions, which is an international mechanism for the preservation of international peace and security. — Bernama
