Penang legislature is no place for revenge: CM

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang legislature is no place for revenge but a place to discuss and resolve issues faced by the people according to Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
He said the state opposition's intention to table a motion demanding his resignation pending his trial for graft was an act of political revenge.
Lim said their motion came about after the state wanted to table a motion to censure Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Shahbudin Yahaya for his remarks on rapists and their victims last week in Parliament.
"They only want to table a motion when we want to table a motion against the remarks made by Shahbudin.
"I feel that this is an abuse and an insult to the state legislative body," he said in a press conference today but stressed the state opposition had the right to do so.
Lim earlier witnessed Penang Island City Council Mayor Datuk Patahiyah Ismail signing an MOU with Sanya Vice Mayor Xu Zhen Ling to strengthen bilateral ties between the two cities.
"We will also work together in many sectors such as cultural, creative industries, sports and local tourism products," Patahiyah said after the signing.
On DAP's stand on the tabling of the bill to strengthen the Syariah Courts, referred to as RUU355, Lim said the bill was unconstitutional as it changes the character and identify of the Federal Constitution.
The DAP secretary-general said it was wrong procedurally and technically to change the constitutional framework of the Federal Constitution by an ordinary bill.
He said an ordinary bill needed a simple majority to pass while a constitutional amendment required a majority of two-thirds of parliamentarians.
"Non-Muslims and quite a few Muslims too, are not anti-Islam or interfering in Islamic matters in opposing RUU 355, it is about ensuring that the safeguards provided in the Federal Constitution continue to be upheld and protected," he said in a statement.
