Silat trainer gets jail, whipping for illegal possession of grenade, bullets

KOTA BARU: A silat trainer, who is believed to be involved with Daesh militant group, was sentenced to five years' jail and six strokes of the rotan by the Sessions Court here today for being in possession of a hand grenade and two bullets without permit last month.
Judge Nazri Ismail handed down the sentence to Mohammad Sabri Mat Zain, 46, after he pleaded guilty to both charges.
Mohammad Sabri was sentenced to five years' jail and six strokes of the rotan for the first offence and two years' jail for the second.
The court ordered the jail sentences to be served concurrently from the date of his arrest on March 21.
On the first count, Mohammad Sabri was alleged to be in possession of the hand grenade at No.2975, Kampung Batu 7, Teluk Kandis, Salor, Kota Baru between 7.55am and 1.20pm on March 21, 2017.
The offence under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 is punishable with a maximum imprisonment of 14 years and six strokes of the rotan, if convicted.
On the second count, the father of five was alleged to be in possession of ammunitions, namely two bullets, without permit on the same day and at the same time and place.
For that, he was charged under Section 8(a) of the Firearms Act 1960 which carries a maximum jail term of seven years or fine not exceeding RM10,000, or both, if convicted.
Earlier, Mohammad Sabri was also charged at the Magistrate's Court with posting materials related to Daesh militant group in his Facebook page under the name of "Pecula Naga".
He was alleged to have committed the offence at the Kota Baru District Police headquarters at 1 pm on April 4, 2017, and was charged under Section 130JB(1)(b) of the Penal Code. However, no plea was recorded.
Magistrate Mohd Azrul Hasyimi Mohammad set May 14 for remention. — Bernama
