Woman held for offensive statement against Johor Sultan

JOHOR BARU: Police arrested a businesswoman for allegedly uploading an offensive statement against the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar and the Johor Royal Institution on Facebook.
Johor police chief Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said the 48-year old woman was arrested at about 11.30pm on Tuesday at the compound of the Brickfield police station in Selangor following a report received on the incident at about 12.30pm on April 9.
In a statement today,  he added, investigation papers were opened to trace the individual believed to be involved in the posting of the offensive remarks.
The case is being investigated under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which carries a fine of up to RM50,000 or one year's jail, or both, upon conviction and also liable to a further fine of RM1,000 for everyday during which the offence is continued after conviction.
The woman is being remanded until April 14 to assist police investigations.
Wan Ahmad advised members of the public not to abuse the social media and those caught doing so would have to face the consequences.
He warned that stern action would be initiated against anyone found to have abused the social website by issuing false statements, offending, abusing, threatening and disturbing others.
