KUCHING: Police have reclassified the case involving a woman who was arrested for allegedly dumping her baby at the Samajaya Apartments here on Tuesday as murder.
Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department chief SAC Datuk Dev Kumar said police found new evidence that the baby girl was still alive when she was stuffed inside a box and later dumped into the refuse bins.
"The case was previously investigated under Section 318 of the same Act for concealment of birth by disposal of a dead body.
"Police has reclassified the case as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code. The 24-year-old suspect has been remanded for a week until April 19. She is now being treated at the Sarawak General Hospital here," he said today.
It was reported that a cleaner at the apartment found the body of the dead infant stuffed inside a red-coloured package, slightly larger than a shoe box, about 10am today.
The suspect, who is a third year diploma student of a nearby college, from Belaga, was arrested about two hours after the shocking discovery.
Preliminary investigation on Tuesday showed that the baby was delivered the same day about 6.30 am in the bathroom of the apartment unit, located few blocks away from the waste area.
