KUALA LUMPUR: Activist and former Petaling Jaya Municipal Council councillor Peter Chong (pix) who went missing on April 5 but was later found to have left for Thailand is yet to contact his family despite his whereabouts being revealed by police.
Kuala Lumpur police CID chief SAC Rusdi Md Isa confirmed today that Chong's family was yet to hear from him and declined further comments.
It is learnt that police have contacted their Thai counterpart to trace Chong and inform him to contact his family who had lodged a police report after they could not contact him.
Sources revealed that it is not clear why Chong had left for Thailand secretly but investigators learnt that the man is believed to be facing financial issues and had left the country due to stress.
A task force headed by Rusdi has taken charge of the investigations and efforts to trace Chong after receiving a report of his disapperance.
Police had interviewed several of his friends and family members before intelligence reports revealed there was no criminal element in his disappearance.
On Wednesday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar revealed in a press conference that police learnt that Chong had left in a bus to Thailand via Bukit Kayu Hitam.
He added that police also have a photo of Chong crossing the border.
Attempts to contact Chong's family for comments were futile at press time.
Chong who was apparently an active participant of candlelight vigils held for missing pastor Raymond Koh who was abducted by a group of men on Feb 13 had earlier claimed in a message on Facebook that on March 31 he was approached by a young motorcyclist who gave him a "friendly" warning about people going "missing".
With the message being posted just days before he went "missing", his disappearance caused fear among some who alleged he may have suffered the same fate as Koh.
