Tan Sri businessman and son freed

PUTRAJAYA: A Tan Sri businessman who was a former MIC vice-president, his son and two others held by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission last week over a bribery scandal involving a RM13 million work contract with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) were freed on bail today after spending eight days in remand.
The suspects were among eight men held who were arrested by the MACC over an alleged fraudulent claim of RM13 million for the supply of 358 geotubes meant for dredging and excavation work involving river restoration projects.
Two suspects were freed on Monday but the remand order on the Tan Sri, his son and two others were extended by another two days.
They landed themselved in trouble over the 2013 project when an internal audit found only 89 geotubes worth RM4 million were supplied to the DID by the Tan Sri's company.
Apart from the businessman and his son, the other detained was an ex-staff of the Tan Sri, an ex-DID director and the department's current engineers and a director. The 63-year-old businessmen and his 31-year-old son were detained in Johor while the rest were held in Malacca and Seremban.
