PETALING JAYA: Whether Terry Yee, the man who caused a social media upheaval for abusing a dog in his housing area, will face the law for his actions is up to the deputy public prosecutor (DPP).
Police conducted early investigations into the matter as police reports had been lodged against Yee. However, early last week the police had handed over the whole investigation to the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS).
Serdang police chief ACP Megat Mohd Aminuddin Megat Alias told theSun that the case will be handled by the DVS and that an investigation paper had already been opened.
However, the DVS told theSun recently that action will only be taken when the DPP instructs them based on the investigation papers which have already been given to them.
"Action depends on the direction given to the DVS by the deputy public prosecutor's office based on the investigation papers," said a DVS officer, Dr Aidi Mohamad.
"Action might be taken under Section 44 of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 for animal cruelty," he said. Section 44 of the Act carries a minimum fine of RM20,000 and maximum of RM100,000 or a three-year jail term, or both upon conviction.
Yee's actions went viral on social media, with netizens hitting out at him.
The dog named Furby is currently under the supervision of the Petaling district veterinary officer.
