PETALING JAYA: PAS secretary-general Datuk Takiyiddin Hassan has withdrawn from contesting for a vice president's post in the upcoming Islamist party's polls.
Stating that he has full confidence in the PAS central committee and current leadership helmed by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang and deputy president Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, Takiyuddin said he preferred to give way to other candidates who could take the party to greater heights.
"I have made the decision to pull out of contesting the vice-president's post and will also not be contesting for a post in the party's central committee," he said in a statement today.
Thanking his supporters for nominating him earlier, Takiyuddin also expressed his willingness to accept any position appointed by the party leadership.
PAS will be hosting the party's 63rd annual muktamar in Alor Star, Kedah, at the end of the month, where party delegates will elect a new leadership for the 2018/2019 session.
Hadi and Tuan Ibrahim have retained their position as party president and deputy respectively after going through unopposed, last week.
The three incumbent vice-presidents Datuk Iskandar Abdul Samad, Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah and Idris Ahmad are expected to defend their posts after receiving enough nominations.
Party information chief and Temerloh MP Nasruddin Hassan Tantawi is expected to mount a challenge against the trio for the post despite Takiyuddin's withdrawal.
The 18 positions in the party's central committee will be contested by 40 nominated candidates who have until today to accept their nominations.
