AYER KEROH: Four girls from Tunas Bakti School in Malacca, a girls' correctional facility, were charged at the Sessions Court today for sexually assaulting a fellow female inmate using an object.
The four girls pleaded not guilty after the charges were read out in front of Sessions Court judge Ahmad Sazali Omar.
The quartet - one aged 19, two 18 and one 17 - were charged under Section 377CA of the Penal Code which carries a maximum 30-year jail term and whipping.
They were charged with committing 'sex against the order of nature' by inserting a bottle of deodorant into the private parts of a 17-year-old girl at a room in the school at about 5pm on April 9.
Deputy public prosecutor Siti Ruvinna Mohd Rawi urged the judge to set bail at RM30,000 each with one surety as the girls are set to be released by the school soon.
Defence counsel Andrew Lourdes requested that the judge to set the bail at not more than RM5,000 as all the girls are from low income families with many siblings.
He also pointed out the fact that despite bail granted, the accused would still only be limited to the confines of the correctional school, thus negating the possibility of them escaping custody.
Sessions judge Ahmad Sazali set bail at RM15,000 each with one surety and hearing was set for May 17.
He added that the girls will have to remain at the school until the case is settled even if bail is paid.
