MBPP warns operators of quadricycles to stop their vehicles from operating immediately

GEORGE TOWN: Operators of quadricycles (pedal powered four-wheel vehicles) have been urged to immediately stop their vehicles from operating.
Penang Island City Council (MBPP) secretary Yew Tung Seang warned them these vehicles risked being seized if they were still on the streets.
He said the council views the issue seriously as it posed safety concerns, especially the safety of other road users.
He said MBPP also never issued nor permitted the operation of such vehicles after seizing 18 of these bicycles since last year while five were still unclaimed yet.
"We will continue our crackdown," he said at a press conference and said a RM500 fee would be imposed to get back the vehicle.
Several disgruntled users had cried foul after local authorities seized their vehicles and issued numerous summonses to them.
However, MBPP had clarified that bicycles with more than two wheels are not allowed for activities under the Local Government Act 1976.
Action could also be taken by the council and Road Transport Department (RTD) under Streets, Drainage and Building Act 1974 and the Road Transport Act 1987 respectively.
