GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government will proceed with moving a motion in the coming State Legislative Assembly sitting to censure Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Shahbudin Yahaya for his remarks on rapists marrying their victims.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the decision was made during an Exco meeting on Wednesday.

He also stressed the motion was against the remarks made by the parliamentarian and not against Islam nor against Islamic family law.

He said criticism against the parliamentarian was on his remarks and not against religion or religious law.

"The Exco has made the decision to move the motion to defend and uphold the rights and dignity of women," he said in a press conference today.

Earlier, Lim announced the Penang Digital Library (PDL) will be opened for 24 hours beginning May 1 to offer better services to the public.

He said the security at the PDL will also be increased following the 24-hour move and the opening hours will be reviewed after three months.

He said public response has been good following the opening of the PDL in October last year with an average of 1,200 to 2,000 visitors a month while some 2,000 have subscribed to access the e-books.

"Some of the facilities at the PDL include the use of iPads, collaboration rooms and an amphitheater for the convenience of the public," he said.
