GEORGE TOWN: A former Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) ship has been given a new role to play after she was sunk to become an artificial reef in the waters of the Pulau Payar Marine Park, Kedah.
MMEA Maritime District Two director Captain Rozali Mohd Said said the ceremony to scuttle the ship was conducted on April 19 for the KM Nyireh.
He said the 52-year-old vessel was commissioned the KD Sri Negeri 9 while serving in the (RMN) before being reassigned to the MMEA in 2006.
He said the Sipadan class ship was subsequently reassigned to the Malaysian Marine Parks Department in March this year for their artificial reef biodiversity recovery program.
He said the KM Nyireh as an artificial reef will have a significant impact on conservation efforts and enhance tourism activities at the park.
"Pulau Payar is well known for scuba diving especially for 'dive wreck' activities," he said in a statement today.
Rozali said KM Nyireh contributed significantly to ensure Malaysian maritime laws were adhered to as well as keeping the country safe and secure during its time of duty.
