KUALA LUMPUR: Police have seized RM2.5 million worth of drugs comprising ecstacy, erimin 5, syabu, ganja, ketamine and ephedrine following cooperation with Taiwan's Criminal Investigations Bureau.
Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Commissioner Datuk Seri Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the drugs were seized in separate raids at Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Cochrane and Taman Desa here on Tuesday between 2am and 2pm.
He said nine suspects comprising seven local men, a Bangladeshi and a Vietnamese woman aged between 22 and 46 were arrested following raids by the NCID and Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING).
"These drugs were from China and supposed to be for entertainment outlets nationwide," he said at a press conference at Bukit Aman police headquarters here today.
He said if the syndicate was successful, it would have been able to produce 20kg of syabu, which would be able to cater for 100,000 addicts.
"The chemicals were all ready in the house to be processed. We managed to bust this lab before it started operating.
"The next probable move the syndicate was looking at would be bringing in a chemist to overlook the manufacturing," he said.
Mohd Mokhtar added that the arrests were made under Section 39b of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
"These drug traffickers do not fear the law or the authorities. They seems to be driven by the money and greed. But international cooperation and intelligence sharing made this success possible," he added.
He added that police also seized some RM125,830 in cash.
"We also seized several luxury cars belonging to the syndicate," he said.
During the raids, police seized 19,661 Ecstacy pills, 21,396 Eramin 5 pills, 2,283 pills believed to be Ecstacy, 155g of substance believed to be syabu, 60g of ganja, 44g of ketamine, 30.5kg of ephedrine, which is a chemical used to make amphetamines.
Prior to this drug bust, police had arrested a total of 57,872 people in connection with drug related offences from Jan 1 to April 17 and seized drugs amounting to RM81.94 million.
