ALOR STAR: Police detained a husband and wife from Kulim for trafficking in heroin worth RM50,000 at the Gurun rest area of the North-South Expressway (NSE) yesterday.
State Narcotics chief Supt Helmi Aris said the couple were nabbed at the parking area of the rest stop at 4.20pm.
He said police ordered them to open their car doors for inspection and was shocked to find a black plastic bag containing 2.26kg of heroin under the passenger's seat.
He said the 29-year-old labourer and his unemployed wife, aged 38, were arrested and taken back to the police station for further investigations.
"We believe the drugs are for distribution in Gurun and Sungai Petani," he said in a statement.
The couple will be remanded for investigations under Section 39(B) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.
