Business as usual at food court despite closure of popular ice kacang stall

GEORGE TOWN: It will be business as usual at the popular New World Park food court in Jalan Burma, despite the closure of the popular Swatow Lane ais kacang stall, according to the operator, PPB Group Berhad (PPB).
Its Property Division chief operating officer Chew Hwei Yeow said the famous food court will not be closed down.
He said the management will also try their best to ensure the famous ais kacang stall stays on.
Chew said they will try to persuade the owner of the business not to quit.
He however said if the owner was adamant, they will have to look for a new tenant.
"We cannot stop them," he said to the media when met at the management office today.
The brothers running the famous Swatow Lane ice-kacang stall have decided to take a break from the family business which has been around for close to a century.
They plan to close down the business at the end of this month due to high monthly expenses and maintenance cost.
The family started serving the local favourite - a dessert concoction of shaved ice, flavoured syrups, fruits and ice cream - in the early 1920s from a pushcart at the then Swatow Lane.

The place where they started was initially next to the New World Park entertainment center before it was closed down and subsequently bought over and turned into a food court.
