KAJANG: In an effort to boost the future of unprivileged children through education at the Taman Seri Puteri halfway home, here, the Malaysian Youth Council (MBM) and Universiti Malaya will be conducting the 2017 Home Tuition Project beginning from this month until September.
MBM president Mua'mar Ghadafi Jamal Jamaludin said the six-month programme will see 16 undergraduates from UM teaching 10 students Form Three Assessment (PT3) and Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) subjects twice a week.
"The undergraduates will conduct intensive classes every Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 6pm.
"Some of the undergraduates will also personally supervise the progression of each student throughout the classes in preparation for the examinations," he told reporters at the halfway home, here, today.
During a simple ceremony to mark the launch of the 2017 Home Tuition Project, Mua'mar presented RM5,000 contribution to the programme coordinators.
Taman Seri Puteri is a halfway home maintained by the Welfare Department as a shelter for teenage girls who are victims of sexual abuse as well as domestic problems.
There are currently 30 girls aged between 11 to 18 at the home.
Through the programme, Mua'mar said will also enable the undergraduates to earn their credits in the Community Service subject by performing community service and humanitarian works.
"The programme hopefully will enable the students who have been through a dark phase of their lives to stand out for a better future," he said.
When asked on future plans on expanding the programme, Mua'mar expressed hope that more organisations can offer their services for similar collaboration.
"Previously, similar programmes were on a one-off basis. This is the first time that we are able to organise a six-month programme for these students.
"Hopefully, our efforts would be taken notice by other organisations so that we could push forward," he added.
