FOUNDER and Chairman of Sunway Group, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah received Victoria University's 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award from Chancellor of Victoria University, George Pappas, at the Victoria University Graduation Ceremony held at Sunway Resort Hotel and Spa recently.
Cheah graduated from Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia, with a degree in business and accounting in the 1960s. Victoria University later became the first university to bestow upon Cheah his first honorary doctorate in 1993.
The award is especially significant to Cheah, a recognition from his alma mater. "Victoria University holds a special place in my heart," he said to a hall of VU graduates.
"I treasure my university experience so much that I invited my alma mater to partner with us at Sunway to offer the programmes which you are graduating from today."
The Distinguished Alumni Award is awarded each year to recognise the outstanding achievements and contributions of a member of the Victoria University alumni in their chosen field of endeavour.
Only one recipient is selected each year, based on several selection criteria including being recognised as a leader in their field, receiving formal recognition for their endeavours, demonstrating integrity and high ethical standards, and exemplifying the pursuit of excellence in everything they do.
Victoria University is ranked 56 in the world's top universities aged under 50 in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings.
