UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA (UM), the first university in Malaysia, is ranked at 133 in 2016 in the QS World University Ranking and 27 in the QS Asian University Rankings in 2016.
With a long list of collaborations with 2,249 international academic institutions in areas ranging from medicine and engineering to social sciences and humanities with countries like Australia, China, France and the United Kingdom, UM provides their students opportunities to enrich themselves via knowledge exchange or the opportunity for student exchange.
In terms of field of studies, Life Sciences & Medicine, Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology as well as Social Sciences & Management, UM is ranked number one in Malaysia for on-demand courses and jobs. UM also ranked first for academic reputation, employer reputation and inbound and outbound student exchange by QS Asian University Rankings.
With the reputation as the longest established university in Malaysia, UM graduates are highly valued by employers, and affiliation with the UM name being sought by many not only from Malaysia but also from other countries in the region.
UM offers a comprehensive range of quality postgraduate degrees, with more than 140 master programmes and PhD offered through its 20 faculties, centres and institutes.
For the 2016 convocation, 2,237 students received their postgraduate degrees. Among them, 504 graduands were at the doctoral level.
UM is a research-intensive comprehensive university with 12 faculties, five institutes, two academies and three centres offering courses at the pre-university, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Currently, it has more than 21,000 students; among them are roughly about 10,000 undergraduates and 11,500 postgraduates. Among the postgraduate candidates, 2,800 are international candidates from 84 countries.
All of the programmes offered are accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and many of the programmes are also internationally accredited.
UM's Masters in Medical Physics is accredited by the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine UK since 2007. This privilege is only accorded to engineering faculties in top universities in the region.
Its MBA programme is recognised by the Association of Master of Business Administration (AMBA), United Kingdom.
UM and its Faculty of Business and Accountancy is also the first public university to have "double crown" status from international recognised accreditation bodies – AMBA and AACSB.
Three Master of Clinical Dentistry programmes (Periodontology, Restorative Dentistry in Conservative Dentistry and Restorative Dentistry in Prosthetic Dentistry) offered by the Faculty of Dentistry have been accepted as "training" sufficient for the Membership of Restorative Dentistry RCS (UK) examination.
University of Malaya is always looking to innovate. True to its motto in being a "leader in research and innovation", UM's Dual PhD programme is just an example of how it pursues higher education innovations to the next level.
Currently, UM has established this programme with 22 partner universities from all over the world such as Australia, Belgium, France, Iran, Japan, Taiwan and United Kingdom. The Dual PhD programme is tailor-made according to the requirements of each institution and candidate.
The Dual PhD programme is completed at two universities where the candidate will receive two certificates – both certificates will acknowledge the collaboration.
The establishment of the Dual PhD programme provides a means of developing a long-term research partnership between institutions.
UM ensures a vibrant research environment in campus with seminars and conferences frequently organised at all levels. UM academics are involved in a multitude of research projects which support students in postgraduate research.
Research activities are supported with the latest electronic sources.
To ensure the UM programmes remain competitive and meet the market's needs, programme review and re-evaluation has been executed.
Several new programmes have been introduced in line with current developments and needs, which include Master of Data Science, Master of Information Technology Management, Master of Library and Information Science and Master of Accounting (Reporting and Management Accountability).
UM is opening its application process online from now until May 31 for all programmes offered for the first semester intake. The second semester will commence in February 2018.
