SERDANG: Police recorded a statement last week from activist Peter Chong (pix) on his claim of having information on the abduction of pastor Raymond Koh.
Selangor police CID chief SAC Fadzil Ahmat said Chong had given his cooperation on the matter when he met with investigators on April 19.
He said the probe on Koh's abduction is ongoing and police will investigate Chong's statement.
Chong who went missing on April 6 and was later found to have left for Thailand returned to Malaysia 10 days later claiming he had crossed the border to seek information on Koh's abduction.
He claimed that on arriving Hatyai, he was abducted by a man and taken to Pattaya before being freed days later.
Chong who was a regular participant of vigils held for Koh did not lodge a report on the abduction with Thai police and returned to Malaysia after contacting his family.
His disappearance led to fears of him being abducted as a week earlier he had said in a Facebook posting that he was approached by a motorcyclist who warned him about people going "missing".
On a separate matter, Fadzil said 33 out of the 38 people held for links with the Gang 24 Apache, a banned underworld group were students.
He said the students were freed on bail after questioning but five others remain in custody for investigations.
Fadzil said the suspects who are aged between 16 and 25 were also found to have kept in contact through a group account under the Whatsapp application.
He said the suspects did not possess past criminal records but are believed to have been lured to the gang through its recruitment.
Fadzil who advised parents to monitor the movements of their children said police are on the lookout for more suspects.
Police carried out an operation on the gang members following a video that went viral showing uniformed students of a school in Klang burning firecrackers and cutting cake to celebrate the gang's existence last week.
In Kuantan, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said police have identified schools that face issues with gangsterism and are closely monitoring it.
He also urged parents and teachers to share information on gangsterism with police to address the issue.
