Suspect in tahfiz student abuse case given extended remand till May 3

JOHOR BARU: The suspect of the tahfiz (Islamic boarding school) studentabuse incident has been given an extended remand till May 3 by the Kota Tinggi magistrate on Friday.
The suspect, a 29-year-old assistant warden, is alleged to have assaulted a group of student for being noisy in a mosque in the school in Kampung Lukut, Kota Tinggi on March 24. One of the students later died. He was arrested on April 22.
Johor Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Datuk Kamarul Zaman Mamat said the extended remand is needed for further investigation under Section 302 for murder.
The victim, Mohamad Thaqif Amin, 11, who had both his legs amputated due to an infection after the incident, died at the Sultan Ismail Hospital near here, at 2.05pm, April 26.
The case has been changed to investigation for murder after the boy died, previously it was investigated under the Child Act (Amended) 2016.
