Guan Eng condemns chess attire fiasco

GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said he was ashamed that a 12-year-old girl had been forced to withdraw from a chess championship due to her "seductive" attire.
He said it was totally unacceptable for the organiser not to allow the girl to participate in the chess tournament held in Putrajaya, pointing out that she was a child and her attire should not be deemed inappropriate.
Lim condemned the action and urged the organisers to ensure it does not happen again in future.
"We should call it clothes association instead of chess association since they prioritise attire," he quipped, after releasing two million fish at an event in Pantai Tanjong Asam, Gertak Sanggul, today.
He said the country was again in the limelight for all the wrong reasons.
The student, a disctrict-level chess champion, was humiliated by the actions of the tournament director and chief of the National Scholastic Chess Championship 2017 on April 14 in Putrajaya.
Malaysian Chess coach Kaushal Khandar reportedly said the chief arbiter informed the student that the dress she wore was improper.
