PETALING JAYA: Bukit Aman's Special Branch Counter Terrorism Division has arrested six suspects believed to be involved in Islamic State (IS) activities, including two men who allegedly smuggled in weapons from southern Thailand for the terror group.
The six - four men and two women, aged between 26 and 41 - were picked up by the police following raids in Kelantan, Johor, Malacca, Selangor and Penang.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the first arrests involved two men in Kelantan on March 24 and 25.
"We believe they were involved in smuggling weapons from a neighbouring country for the terror group members in Malaysia," he said today.
Khalid said in the third arrest, a 26-year-old medical laboratory student was picked up at the KL International Airport (KLIA) on April 4 after she went to Turkey on Aug 29 last year with the intention of going to Syria to join the IS.
"However, while waiting for further instructions from the Malaysian militant Muhammad Wanndy Mohamed Jedi who is in Syria, the suspect was detained by Turkish authorities on Feb 5," he said.
Khalid said two more arrests were made on a 41-year-old jobless man and a 32-year-old woman, who worked as a factory technician.
The duo were actively promoting IS propaganda via the Google Plus app.
A 41-year-old man detained in Penang on April 25, was the sixth arrest, after he was found promoting the IS struggle via his own 15 Facebook accounts since 2014.
The suspect was also planning to launch an attack on Syiah mosques in Penang.
Meanwhile, Khalid revealed police are also looking for Muhammad Muzaffa Arieff Junaidi, 27, from Kampung Gertak, Rantau Panjang in Kelantan.
Khalid said Muhammad Muzaffa, had fled on March 22 to southern Thailand, via Sungai Golok and is said to have links with the duo who were arrested in Kelantan.
Muhammad Muzaffa managed to escape to Thailand with an M4 Carbine rifle and a pistol on March 22.
Those with information on Muzaffa are urged to contact Inspector Mohd Badri Othman at 011-2692489.
Meanwhile, earlier at a police function in Shah Alam, Khalid said police have interviewed Muhammad Wanndy's family in Malacca.
"It looks suspicious as there are other reasons that may have led him to stage his death. We know that he has other reasons for doing so but let us investigate," Khalid said and declined to elaborate further.
