ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) and Yayasan Peneraju Pendidikan Bumiputera (Yayasan Peneraju) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will see 3,000 bumiputra students sponsored to study the CAT and ACCA professional accountancy qualifications over the next three years.
This partnership aims to increase the number of professionally qualified bumiputra accountants in the country. It has been reported that the Malaysian government aims to raise bumiputra representation in the accounting profession to 30% by 2030. This is part of the government's effort to increase the overall number of professional accountants in Malaysia to 60,000 by 2020.
Eligible bumiputra students will go through a stringent selection process by Yayasan Peneraju; those who qualify for the scholarship will be eligible for wide ranging financial support via convertible loans.
These will cover initial registration fees, tuition fees, exam fees, annual subscription fees, allowances and accommodation. They will be placed at ACCA Approved Learning Partners selected by the Yayasan Peneraju.
This programme is intended to ease the way for bumiputra students, encouraging them into the accountancy profession and, in doing so, contribute to Malaysia's economic development.
Present were ACCA's executive director of Strategy and Developments Alan Hatfield and Yayasan Peneraju chief executive Raja Azura Raja Mahayuddin.
