SELAYANG: Residents of Bandar Baru Kundang want the Selayang City Council (MPS) to resolve the issue of flash floods in the area, a result of new development projects which has put a strain on the drainage system.
Bandar Baru Kundang resident's representative Muhammad Ridzuan Taib, 52, the recent flash flood which happened on May 2, had caused damage to residential property in the area.
"Before 2011, our area never experienced flash floods. But in the past six years, almost every year we have to face it.
"This year is the worst, there has been three major flash floods to date.
"The latest was on May 2, where the water level reached about 0.1m to 0.5m, whereas the limit of the Kundang tributary is at -2.5, while the Kundang river stands at -3.5m," Muhammad Ridzuan told theSun.
He said heavy downpour in the area had caused the Kundang tributary to overflow.
"Bandar Baru Kundang itself has about 1,200 houses, and then the water from Tasik Puteri also flows into the Kundang tributary, not to mention the development in Kundang Estate which also flows its water to the tributary.
"We begin to question whether these projects have gone through the MPS town planning board, or whether the authorities did not properly study the drainage system before approving a project.
"It is really unfair for us to face this mishap. We really want MPS to settle the issue as soon as possible," he said.
Meanwhile, about 30 residents of Bandar Baru Kundang staged a protest in front MPS' office, demanding for the council to resolve the issue.
The group also passed a memorandum to MPS Corporate Department Director Mohamad Zin Masoad for the authorities to take action.
However, Mohamad Zin decline to answer theSun's queries on the follow up action to be taken by the council.
