PIAM: No response yet from MyCC on motor claims dispute

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysia Competition Commission (MyCC) has not responded to written representations made by the General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM) in relation to the dispute between the two parties over insurance claims payments for motor repairs.
“PIAM and its 22 general insurance members have, through their solicitors, lodged their written representations with MyCC.
“PIAM has not received any feedback from MyCC thus far in respect of this matter,” it said in an email reply to SunBiz.
MyCC did not respond to queries. PIAM was given an extension till April 25 to make its representations to MyCC.
In February, MyCC announced a proposed decision to impose a RM213.45 million fine against PIAM and its members due to the agreement between PIAM and the Federation of Automobile Workshop Owners’ Association of Malaysia (Fawoam) for fixed trade discount rates for parts of certain vehicle makes, and labour hourly rates for workshops under the PIAM Approved Repairers Scheme.
Both PIAM and Bank Negara Malaysia had said the agreement was reached on a central bank’s directive to resolve significant consumer complaints regarding repair times in the motor insurance industry. BNM had also noted that MyCC’s proposed decision would severely impact consumers’ interest.
